Two Sequoyah High School students and Georgia Career Student Association members, Emily Macke and Ansley Brown, were honored for their winning essays on “How to Prevent Home Fires” at the 17th Annual Life, Fire, and Safety Awards Luncheon sponsored by John W. Oxendine, Georgia’s Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner. Emile Macke (first place winner for 9th grade essay competition) and Ansley Brown (2nd place winner for 9th grade essay competition) were invited to attend the Awards Luncheon held at the historical Georgia Railroad Freight Depot on October 29, 2009 in downtown Atlanta. Each winner was awarded a duffle bag full of various products donated by local businesses and a private tour of the state capitol.
Also in attendance to support these winners were parents: Mr. Chris Macke and Mr. Rob Brown, Mrs. Virginia Turner (DOE Program Specialist for Career Technology Academic Education), Mr. Pete Rohan (SHS Career Technology Academic Education Supervisor), Mrs. Casandra Hembree (SHS Georgia Career Student Association Advisor), and Mrs. Heather Pope (SHS Para Educator for Technology).



The Sequoyah High School Georgia Career Student Association officers attended the annual GCSA Officer Training Conference on October 30-31 at the Westin Conference Center in Atlanta.
After being officially sworn in as GCSA 2009-2010 Officers, these students were invited to participate in this conference to attend workshops to assist them in successfully executing their upcoming GCSA officer responsibilities. Some of these workshops included:
Cybersafety: Advice to High School Students, Perfectly Polished: Social Skills 101, The New Georgia411, and Breaking the Spirit of Average. The keynote speaker for the conference was Mr. Joseph B. Washington, author
of Get Out of Your Rut: Begin Breaking the Spirit of Average. Mrs.
Cassey Hembree, GCSA Advisor, stated that "the exuberance of the students who attended this conference was overwhelming! The keynote speaker motivated these teenagers with a powerful challenge to progress from an average life to an awesome life. My officers left this experience with energy, efficiency, and enthusiasm!"

GCSA North Metro School of Technology Field Trip
The Sequoyah High School Georgia Career Student Association members took a field trip to North Metro School of Technology on November 5th. These students toured the various technical programs currently being offered and took part in many hands-on classroom labs as well as a Georgia411 workshop. Cherokee County Service League President, Mrs. Jamie Bobo, receives a plaque from Sequoyah High School Georgia Career Student Association Advisor, Mrs. Casandra Hembree at their meeting on November 10, 2009.
Mrs. Hembree presented the plaque on behalf of GCSA for all of the financial support the CCSL provided last year. Mrs. Hembree stated, "the Cherokee County Service League supports our school and community in so many ways, GCSA just wanted to make sure they know how much we appreciate them."

Michelle Francis, Sequoyah High School Graduation Coach, assists freshmen Nathan Alexander and Jerel Fike with their questions concerning scheduling issues during her workshop entitled, “Freshmen Focus Advisement.” During her presentation, Mrs. Francis offered a hands-on approach to Mrs. Hembree’s Project Success classes and Georgia Career Student Association, offering individual counseling sessions on 2012 graduation requirements.
Donna Lloyd, Career Pathways Facilitator, delivers a presentation entitled, “Generations in the Workforce: How Does This Affect You?” Pictured is Mrs. Lloyd explaining to Mrs. Hembree’s Project Success/Georgia Career Student Association students Monica Ponce, Kelsey Ent, and Kimberly Nagy how to successfully prepare for a job interview. Mrs. Lloyd discussed the differences among Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials and how students must adapt their answers, resumes, and interviewing skills to meet the needs of the interviewer.

Sequoyah High School Georgia Career Student Association members and Project Success students met Steve and Vikki of the infamous Atlanta “Steve and Vikki Morning Show” while on a World of Coke field trip on November 19, 2009. These students, who are big fans of the radio talk show hosts, were complimented by Steve and Vikki on their GCSA club t-shirts they were wearing during The World of Coke tour which read:

Students took this opportunity to speak with Steve and Vikki regarding their Project Success class, organization, and school. They also shared how much they were enjoying their field trip to The World of Coke.
