Sequoyah High School Student Wins First Place in Essay Competition

Mario Sucar, a Georgia Career Student Association (GCSA) member at Sequoyah High School in Canton, Georgia won first place for his essay entitled “It is Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires”. Mario’s essay was submitted through his Project Success class and entered in a state-wide competition sponsored by John Oxendine, Georgia’s Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner.
To commemorate Mario’s winning essay, he and his family were invited to attend a special luncheon at the historical Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in downtown Atlanta on Thursday, October 23rd where he received a $100 saving s bond, a backpack full of donated items by local businesses, a first place blue ribbon and a certificate of honorable mention. Mario was also given a VIP tour of the Capitol and was personally congratulated by Georgia’s Governor Sonny Purdue.
Also attending the luncheon in support of Mario were the following people: Mrs. Virginia Turner, Georgia Department of Education Intervention Program Specialist and State Coordinator, Mrs. Marcia Strickland, GCSA State Coordinator, Mr. Todd Miller, Assistant Principal of Career Technology Agriculture Education at Sequoyah High School, and Mrs. Casandra Hembree, Sequoyah High School Project Success Coordinator and GCSA Advisor.
