GCSA HAWKS NIGHT

On Friday, February 26th approximately 400 GCSA students and teachers attended the Annual GCSA Hawks Night.

The afternoon began with an opportunity for students to talk and visit with colleges from the local area. The students then entered Philips Arena where they were greeted by Bob Rathbun, the Official Play by Play Man of the Atlanta Hawks. Bob told how he got started in the broadcasting business at a very early age and encouraged the students to “go after their dreams”. Jason Parker, VP of Guest Services, informed students on what it takes everyday to pull off a minimum of 275 events a year at the arena. Guest Services have a wide array of responsibilities; such as accommodating elephants for a circus, setting up for top performers such as Jay-Z and Beyonce’, installing the basketball court and having the ice ready for the Thrashers. Arthur Triche, VP of Public Relations for the Atlanta Hawks, spoke to the students about what it takes to make a team marketable and he also told a couple of funny stories about his travels with the team. Kassie Broker, Manager of Human Resources, spoke to the crowd about the many job opportunities available at Philips Arena and how a student might go about applying for a position.

Taylor County High was the lucky recipient of “Early Entry” passes for its group. The students and teachers were able to sit courtside during warm-ups and see all the players close-up as they prepared for the game. GCSA State President, Derikas Hines from Calhoun High School, served as a co-captain for the game and went center court to meet with Joe Johnson (#2 of the Atlanta Hawks) and Dirk Norwitzki (#41 of the Dallas Mavericks). Those guys looked really tall next to Derikas!

Although, the Hawks made the game exciting by going into overtime, they did lose out to the Dallas Mavericks but maybe we will have better luck next year!
